Schools: The Community That Could
by Bridget Huckabee

In Greensboro, North Carolina, Guilford County Schools have made unprecedented academic progress in the last few years, experiencing record-setting ABC results.

“I credit the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff,” says Dr. Terry Grier, Guilford County School superintendent.

Grier is in his fifth year as superintendent and has received many awards for leadership and for his contributions to education. Under his watch, significant improvements have led to an unprecedented level of community support for the district’s schools. Guilford County voters approved a $300 million bond referendum to build six new schools, five replacement schools, and renovate and expand 17 other campuses providing 9,225 new student seats. What is particularly impressive about their generosity is that prior to 2000, the county had not passed a construction referendum in 21 years.

Grier has also implemented innovative programs for students and teachers, and business and community engagement programs that have led to the unprecedented support for the public schools.

“I feel any honors I have received belong to my dedicated staff, students, parents and community members of the district,” he says.

Guilford County School District is North Carolina’s third largest. Its wide range of educational choices is unusual for a public school system. The district has 15 magnet schools, three year-round schools and two Montessori schools.

Andrews Academy of Business, Education and Health Sciences, a magnet school, offers to pay the first year college tuition at the state schools A & T or UNCG for students who successfully complete course work in these areas.

The Weaver Academy for the Performing and Visual Arts offers rising ninth and tenth graders interested in pursuing careers in the arts, an exciting new opportunity to focus on high-quality arts and academic classes within a community of other artists.

Public school students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade may attend Erwin Montessori Elementary Magnet School. This personalized approach to learning recognizes that each child has a unique style and pace and learns best in a prepared environment that supports and respects their individual development.

“I can’t imagine a better school environment for my son,” says parent Linda Bedell,” Not only is he mastering academics, he is also mastering himself.”
