The Center for Theatre Arts at Roanoke’s Halifax Community College is putting the spotlight on the area’s local artists. By creating the Annual Arts Extravaganza, Carl Curnette, the Center’s executive director, has provided an opportunity for area artists to showcase their talents and highlight the rich cultural diversity found in the Roanoke Valley area.

Inspired by the success of a recent art exhibit, Curnette, a former costume designer for Broadway and television, came up with the idea for an event that would feature handmade crafts and art in every media by artists from the surrounding counties. The co-sponsors are the Center for Theater Arts and the Halifax County Arts Council.

“The community is very supportive of this endeavor,” says Curnutte. “We hope to broaden the base in the coming years.”

Nikki Johnson, a native of New York with former ties to Jazz at Lincoln Center, is Director of the Center for Theatre Arts.

“We are excited at being able to add more programs to the Center and to reach out to visual artists in the community,” Johnson says. “It’s one of the ways we hope will establish this facility as a cultural center for all the community.”

The Annual Arts Extravaganza has three main components: exhibits by local artists; a competition for adults and children with judging in categories that included photography, oils, watercolor, and multi-media; and an Arts-Market-Place featuring booths for vendors and artists to sell art and craft related items.

The Center hopes to encourage all artists, amateur and professional, to share their work with the community in this annual event, welcoming a variety of mediums including but not limited to paintings, drawing, graphic design and animation, photography, quilting, pottery, stained glass, jewelry and beadwork, weaving, woodcarving, metalwork sculpture, film and video.
